Like all of our doodles, sweet personality and loves, loves, loves to be held and by your side.

UPDATE! Turtle will soon be living in West Irondequoit! A beautiful family came to visit us today and their beautiful daughters chose Turtle (that's our name for her) to be their new best buddy! Derek earned his name because he looks just like his dad "Jeter", our beautiful black doodle. Jeter was named for Derek Jeter, Ruthy's favorite Yankee of all time and so Derek is "son of Jeter".... :) And Lady Fatima (born on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima) is snuggled with her brother here.... Derek is a big, laid back puppy with a sweet nature. He's getting waves, not curls and has a glossy coat. They are two of the biggest puppies... Lady's distinctive and unusual coloring prices her at $2000. Her siblings are priced at $1500.

UPDATE: Lady Fatima and Derek have been sold. We spent the morning cuddling and talking about the strength of womanhood (not even kidding, I had six kids, I totally get it!) and when the babies began arriving around 2:30 PM we had a crew of three here to weigh puppies, check umbilical cords and adjust, and then as the happy family grew, several surrogate "Doulas" snuggled firstborn pups to keep them warm while Maggie delivered the last five...

It was and is amazing.

Puppies are six males, three females. Color tones range from cream to black, an amazing array. We will post more pics as puppies grow. Right now we do minimal handling other than once/day bedding change and weigh-in. All puppies are gaining weight... not even first day weight loss, which is normal. Nope. Keeping Maggie calm and her sweet, giving nature seems to be a winning combination for well-fed babies.

We have two puppies that will be priced higher.

One is chocolate brown or "sable".... Gorgeous female. She will be priced at $2000.00.

The other is a cream female, almost white, a true surprise. She's a throwback to her grandmother on one side and great-grandmother on the paternal side, a beautiful Thistle Rock ivory retriever out of Minnesota. She will also be priced at $2000.00

The price for the other seven gorgeous red, gold and black doodles will be $1500.00.

This pic is from Sunday morning, 5/16... Maggie is so calmly handling her beautiful family. Puppies with full tummies are laying out in sweet "milk comas", a sign of a happy, well-fed and tired baby. :)

$200 non-refundable deposits will be taken in two weeks. We have an interest list started. If you'd like your name on that list, email Ruthy at loganherne@gmail.com or call her cell phone at 585 455 1035. With the farm opening up and planting season upon us, calling her is the fastest and best way to get your name on the list. Ruthy will contact the people on the list in two weeks in the order in which they've expressed interest. Not all people will want a puppy, of course, but the list is already at eight people... and that was before pups were born.

All pups will be dewormed several times here at the farm. They will be vet-checked by Dr. Heidi Wendel of Erie Canal Animal Hospital the end of June and will be available to go to homes a week after Independence Day. (Apple Country Veterinary is their clinic in Hilton). We have worked with Apple Country and Erie Canal Animal Hospital for over a decade and we're blessed to have three veterinarians that were inspired by the late Dr. Dean Snyder, a man who offered advice on my books, my dogs and the common sense wisdom of being a successful owner and breeder.

As owners of both mom and dad, we are happy to share health histories that we have. Jeter (father) was bred here and his mother (puppies' grandmother) is enjoying old age retirement here on the farm. We love Libby... and her gorgeous chocolate brown coloring finally came through in a puppy. :)

Thanking God for a healthy mama and a beautiful delivery!

Ruthy (Blodgett Family Farm) 585 455 1035

723 Parma Center Road

Hilton NY 14468

Ruth Logan Hernehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11550734775151341968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9111441021039703390.post-62285326062356930672021-05-06T08:07:00.000-04:002021-05-06T08:07:30.078-04:00Romance On The Farm!
Anyone's who's seen Disney's "Bambi" understands spring and "Twitterpation"... well, here on the farm, romance is blooming in the canine world!

Years ago we bred Golden Retrievers and Goldendoodles. It was a wonderful learning experience, but when the writing contracts began coming in, and there were still cute kids to teach and counsel and play with and laugh with, there was only so much I could handle. We kept one of the beautiful black doodles. We named him Jeter (after my favorite NY Yankee baseball player, of course!) and he's gorgeous. Sweet. Goofy. Lovable! We didn't neuter him because if he was a wonderful dog, I wanted the option to use him as a stud... if that was in the cards. I'm a big believer in keeping options open some of the time! The trick is knowing when to keep them open, right?

Then two years ago we went to Gap, Pennsylvania to buy Maggie May. She's a gorgeous red/gold Goldendoodle from a very busy breeder in the heart of Amish country. A breeder who is right now charging over $3000.00 per puppy... which is fine, but we wanted to give folks a chance to have a gorgeous Doodle with an easier price tag.

Maggie's dad is a dark red Standard Poodle. Her mom is a blonde Golden Retriever...

Jeter's mom is our Libby... a medium brown standard poodle.... and his dad was Mick , "Hearthside's McDreamy" a red over gold Golden Retriever we traveled to Minnesota to get.

So what color will these sweet puppies be? We have no idea, but we're excited to welcome them to the farm. We are so blessed to live on this fifty-acre spread, a place for kids to run free, for pumpkins and mums to grow, for donkeys to hang out and be cute and for our three dogs... the young couple and the aged grandma dog, Libby... to raise their beautiful puppies.

We have an "interested" list started. If you'd like to be on that list, all I need is your name and email. You can call me at 585 455 1035 OR leave me a comment here. Once the puppies are safely delivered in a couple of weeks, we'll take deposits from folks who are ready... but we're not in a hurry.

We're ready to kind of relax, have a great birthing, and welcome a whole bunch of little Goldendoodles to the planet.

Here are the answers to some questions, and feel free to ask more below:

Price: Asking price for each puppy is $1500.00 cash, Paypal or Venmo.

Size: Mom and Dad are full-sized dogs. Jeter weighs in around 65 lbs. and Maggie is around 55 pounds. They are tall and beautifully proportioned. Neither one has health issues.

Guarantees: Well, life doesn't come with guarantees, but if your pup suffers from a genetic problem in the first year, we will refund your money and bring the dog back here. All shots and veterinary records must be up to date to validate this guarantee. (Standard of care applies)

Gender preference: We don't know what the mix of boys-to-girls will be, so we can't make promises we can't keep... but the sooner people commit to putting down a deposit after birth, the better chance they have of getting the gender of choice and the color of choice, but with dogs of many colors, we don't know what that will be. They may be black puppies, gold puppies, red puppies, or brown puppies... or some of each. Our crew of puppy lovers will be standing by for that very important phone call in ten days or so, letting them know that it's time to gather and greet these babies as they come into the world!

Health history on our side: Like a lot of older big dogs, Jeter's father "Mick" developed seizures when he was six-and-a-half years old. He was put on medication (cost about $10/month) and that controlled them. He lived a full life until passing away in 2019 at the age of 12. He was a wonderful boy, a kind and gentle-hearted dog that loved attention. Jeter is much like him in that regard. Seizure disorders like this aren't unusual for big dogs and Goldens in particular. Jeter is seven years old and has had no health problems at all. He has never had a seizure.

Jeter's mother "Libby" developed mammary gland cancer at age seven. The cancer was removed. A small lump returned three years later. That was also surgically removed and Libby is still prancing around the farm, living her best life as a retiree at age 13. We did not opt to do chemo at either time.

Our Veterinarians: "Apple Country Veterinary Hospital" and "Erie Canal Veterinary Hospital" two local practices staffed by three wonderful and knowledgeable (by the way, that's one of the few words that doesn't lose the "e" before adding the suffix... in case you wanted to know that.) veterinarians, all of who were inspired and influenced by Dr. Dean Snyder, a wonderful man who followed his dreams and passed that inspiration on to the young people who worked for him and with him.

The nice thing about knowing the dog's lineage is that these are our dogs. Our pets. We've raised them and know their temperaments, their idiosyncrasies, their personalities. To us, the main thing about breeding dogs is niceness. Kindness. Affinity for people.

We don't need or want guard dogs. We're a family farm, we have fourteen grandchildren, and I like big, goofy dogs that love unconditionally. A dog's disposition says more to me as a parent and grandparent than physiological tests that may or may not be indicative of what a dog's future might be. That's my personal opinion and I'm fine with other folks wanting or needing different standards.

Give me "Old Yeller" type dogs any day.

While we started this with Golden Retrievers (a breed I love) we moved to Doodles because of the hybrid vigor a first cross brings. The first cross of two purebred dogs lessens the chance of genetic flaws finding a match because it opens the gene pool. <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">From the amazing Melanie Dickerson, author of "The Silent Songbird"... and so many other wonderful books!
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">

Research: How I Included a Real Medieval Castle, a King and Church Graffiti in My Book

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">The Silent Songbird is set in
England in the late 1300s. Part of the plot is that the heroine, Evangeline, is
the ward of King Richard II, who was only about 18 or 19 during the time of my
story. My plot dictates that the story begins at one of the king’s residences.
So I had to do some research on King Richard II’s castles and palaces, and I
ended up choosing Berkhamsted Castle as the setting for the story.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">The only problem—or is it a good
thing?—is that the real Berkhamsted Castle is just a ruin, and little is known
about what it actually looked like in the late 1300s.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">I found a wonderful site on the
internet by The Berkhamsted Local History and Museum Society, <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">https://berkhamsted-castle.org.uk<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> which answered
many of my questions, but since I did not want to violate any known facts about
the castle, I ended up emailing the Society Chairman, Mrs. Jenny Sherwood. She
was a delightful correspondent and kindly answered all my questions. I was so
grateful for her help, and it lent an element of excitement for me to use an
actual English castle.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">And since I was using King Richard
II as a character in my novel, I wanted to get everything right about him, from
his hair color to his personality. I hope I managed to come close to the real
person.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">It was exciting to put a real face
to an English king who has not been treated very kindly by historians, though
the opinion of him has swung back toward favorability in the last few decades. I

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">These were people and places I

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">While sitting in the library
waiting for my daughter, I picked up an Archeology magazine and read an article
about how Medieval people used to carve their prayers into the walls of the
church or on the baptismal font. If your loved one was setting sail on a ship,
you might carve a picture of that ship on the wall along with the date they
left, asking God to keep them safe.

I want you guys to love this book as much as Carrie Townsend (Romantic Times Review) did...

4 1/2 Stars....... TOP PICK for October...

And here's what Carrie had to say:
Whenever children are on the page, Ruth Logan Herne’s writing simply shines. Add to that a trio of hunky cowboy brothers, the strong courageous women who capture their hearts, some adorable animals and a heart-stirring message of faith? In short, it’s the recipe for a perfect Western romance. Readers will find plenty to swoon over in Nick Stafford, both as a single dad and as a cowboy intent on pursuing a woman. The author exudes warmth and grace and love on each page of this novel, and the set-up for the next book leaves readers hungry for more.

Rancher and single dad Nick Stafford needs help. Specifically, he needs Dr. Elsa Andreas’ help or his daughter Cheyenne will be held back for another year in school. Elsa agrees to help, despite her hesitation about coming out of her self-imposed seclusion and risking her heart again. When Nick’s troubled ex-wife appears out of the blue, both of his precious daughters need him — and Elsa — more than ever. Will all of their hearts heal enough to see what God has planned?

I've got a fun scavenger hunt scheduled...

And there are contests going on all over to win copies of "Home on the Range".... and I'm listing the links here:

RUTHY'S POST AT SEEKERVILLE

Yankee Belle Cafe "Isabo's Yellow Rice"

And then the scavenger hunt will be RIGHT HERE!!!!

I am so excited about this story, this series. I love writing westerns, I love cowboy lore and cowboy code and I'm totally in admiration of the women who run these ranches, businesses, etc. side by side with their men...

So catching calves or pulling calves, slogging through mud to unstick equipment, running the background home, house, kids, food and finances... A ranch is a multi-layered deal, and I love it!

It's fall here on the farm, and we're loaded with fun times, cute kids, fall produce and all the bounty of a good harvest... and enough to share, too.

And that's a blessing right there, isn't it?

I'm so excited to share these bits of our life here on the farm... and the Stafford men and their lives on the Double S Ranch in Central Washington.

And yes... I am truly having the time of my life!

It finally feels like fall! Now for you folks who don't like winter, this can be a two-edged sword, but I love fall.... I love the cool nights, the relief from the heat, sweatshirts and sweaters...

I love freezing veggies, making jam and canning pickles...

I love stacking firewood....

I love seeing the glimmers of leaf change, and then the full-blown shift.

But I see the other side, too, the edge toward shorter days and longer nights. The influx of cold, not cool.... But there's a peace in winter, a sleeping, edging toward the spring awakening that I've always loved.

But for now? FALL!!!! We've got pumpkins and gourds at the farm. We've got fresh veggies, too! Squash by the bushel... and every chance I get, I'm sneaking inside to write sweet books or bake something delicious.

I love this season and I'm so delighted to share that with you!

And if you'd like to hear more about this fall's books, happenings and fun at the farm, let me know and I'll add you to my mailing list because it's fun to keep in touch, isn't it? Either let me know in comments below or e-mail me at loganherne@gmail.com.

:)

But it has, and in a couple of weeks I'll be working in the Sisters of St. Joseph kitchen with Sr. Maria Irwin, the science teacher who inspired the Geek Within me at the ripe old age of 14... a brilliant woman whose love of physics opened my mind to so many things!

And taught me to question facts....

And temper teaching by noting that one of science's greatest pros and cons is how it disproves itself on a regular basis!

I love scientific fact, but I'm readily amazed by how often our facts turn out to be misread pages of fiction....

And how often science fiction becomes reality!

Who would have thought we could beam up information at these speeds with no wires???? Not so long ago they would have been amazed about doing it with wires. Now????

Wifi. Shades of First Officer Scott on Star Trek: "Beam me up, Scotty."

Come on, that's a conundrum, isn't it????

It's a beautiful day in upstate, after a cold, windy, dark, thick-clouded June 8th, we're blessed with spring-to-summer weather again, and I love it.

My writing is done for the morning, and I'm going to slip out front and get dirty because there's a therapy in dirt and flowers and gardens unlike any other.

For an hour of quiet... with Lady Antebellum playing on the old boom box.... (Yes, for real!!! It's the only radio in the house that pulls in the weekend Yankee games outside!)

Me and the dirt. With some flower friends coming along.

Flower therapy.

How blessed I am to have this time... time to write, to laugh, to love, to share, to garden.

God is good. Most assuredly.

And we are blessed to be in a land where freedom is the rule, not the exception.

Now... it's garden time, time to rebuild an old pond!!!

Let's see how this comes out!Ruth Logan Hernehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11550734775151341968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9111441021039703390.post-91132034821153598322016-05-24T11:50:00.002-04:002016-05-24T11:50:23.527-04:00Springing into Love! Spring, how I love thee! Let me count the ways!

My website blog is giving me "agita" which is what my sister-in-law says when her family is driving her crazy.

I get it.

And life has enough agitation that the World Wide Web should not be causing more!

Spring.

Romance.

Faith.

And chocolate and coffee.

I'm ready to get dirty. Move soil. Plant flowers. While the world around me is greening up, I'm so excited to play in the dirt, too!

It probably sounds silly, but this is a trait from my Grandma Myrtle Herne. She loved to garden and passed that love down to me, so I'm taking a break from edits, stretching my limbs and getting dirty!

And it will feel marvelous!

Trust me. It will look better when it's done.

I hope!!!! Every time I heard Chris and Martin Kratt tell kids to "Get out and get into nature..." I thought of this! Once the snow melted and the rain stopped, I'd be out in nature.... With dirty knees.

And when you're done, (shameless plug here!) run on over to Amazon and grab a copy of our newest historical collection! "Spring Into Love" is a wonderful set of 4 stories featuring Pam Hillman, Cara Lynn James, Mary Connealy and me!

We had so much fun putting it together, and mine is set about twenty-five years AFTER this old farmhouse of mine was built! Isn't that amazing?

(Which means my basement is kind of like a cross between a tomb and a cave.... enter at your own risk!)

There are hundreds of plants waiting to go into the farm.... The guys are bedding 500 new asparagus plants and 600 strawberry plants found homes over the weekend. That's not a lot of strawberries by farm standards, but since the deer ate all of last year's, we're testing our new deer controls...

We'll see how this all works!

It's spring on the farm, full of birds, frogs, toads, one humongous snapping turtle and no small number of garter snakes...

Welcome to upstate!Ruth Logan Hernehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11550734775151341968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9111441021039703390.post-91133283497011187822015-12-03T00:01:00.000-05:002015-12-03T00:01:00.178-05:00A Season of HopeI love Advent.

I love the prayers.

I love the hymns.

I love the season of preparation, of thinking of others, a time where joy and good will come to mind as automatically as the sun is meant to rise and the snow to fall.

Andy Williams sang about it being the Most Wonderful Time of the Year...

I love that song! I love the anticipation!!!

I used to go overboard with Christmas. Yes. I was That Person.

What a goof!

Now I make sure my priorities aren't on presents, but on giving. Our family fun is in helping others, because we're blessed. How silly that I didn't see this as clearly as a younger mother!

Here's Eli with our Advent wreath on Sunday....
Leftovers turned into Turkey a la King (RECIPE HERE AT YANKEE BELLE CAFE!) and holiday nog, a present from Grandpa....

And a quiet evening of stringing lights and playing games.

We've lighted the first candle, and three to go... The waiting has begun for the best gift of all. A baby, a child of the poor.

And here is the Youtube link to "Child of the Poor/What Child is This?" performed by the Notre Dame Folk Choir.

Wait, that doesn't sound very nice.

Okay, how does Crash Test Dummy sound? Worse, right?

Okay, I won't make you BE anything, I'll do quiet internal testing. I'm weighing blog sites, my blog that's embedded in my website and my fun "Ruthy's Place" blogger site here... and checking out the pros and cons of both!

So bear with me, I don't mean to confuse the issue, but it's kind of fun to see what works best!

First, there's this:

My newest release from Zondervan/Harper Collins, and I cannot tell you how much I love, love, love this story! Part of the "Year of Weddings" novella collection, mine is the 4th book of the 2015 collection and it was so much fun to write!

I was a bridal consultant for eight years at one of the best stores/workplaces imaginable. Started by the Hall family, "Bridal Hall" became a Rochester icon, a business everyone knew about and most visited because you felt like you were somebody when you walked into Bridal Hall... the warm atmosphere, the amazingly nice and helpful staff, the humor, the music, the family vibes... and yet professionally focused to give each bride confidence in her choices...

This book honors those wonderful people I worked with. It's my lovesong to them, to Bridal Hall, to Kathy, Donna and Jean and the entire Hall family and staff.

I have a friend. He's little. Two years old. He's stinkin' cute. His name is Roman Statt and WE LOVE HIM.

This is one of my favorite pics of Roman:

Ignore the clutter, really, that's totally the NORM around here. Focus on the center objects... Cute kid, binky in place, piling HUGE HEAVY THINGS together and balancing them. 18 months old, so funny, very methodical, focused on the job at hand... Dave decided he was an engineer in the making!!!

Stinkin' cute family, right???? Kevin, Darcy and Roman Statt

We love them.

And then there's this:

Roman and his buddies on the porch swing! Brody, Roman, Joslyn, Mary Ruth and Megan!!!!

Healthy, happy, silly, climbing, exploring little boy...

But then....

Things started to change. Looking back we can see the bruising on Roman's legs... with no cause...

Mom and Dad took him to the doctor because bruises shouldn't come out of nowhere...

And now we're here:

And doing this:

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

For so many reasons, I can't possibly list them, but here are the main ones!!! Wonderful hero, troubled by decisions he's made... decisions that affected others and can't be fixed.

A heroine trying to save the family farm, and smart enough and strong enough to do it if only her brothers, the weather, God and the family would cooperate. Oh, and wait, the town supervisor of Kirkwood Lake is eyeing up seizing the lakeshore portion of her farmland for eminent domain to give new people lake access...

Cows.

Beansy-the-goat!!!!!

Puppies. (Author loves puppies!!!!!)

And these twins, Dorrie and Sonya McKinney, how stinkin' adorable are they??? I love them. I loved writing them, and I'm thrilled that the girls get to be in the Christmas book too!!!!

HAPPY DANCING IN UPSTATE!!!!

Falling for the Lawman was inspired by two local farm women: Kim Zarpentine of Zarpentine Farms and Robyn Sweeney of Sweeney Farms. I took their dedication and devotion and hard work and fashioned McKinney Farm after them. And the name, McKinney Farm? That was the original name of the farm I live on.

Grab this book if you don't have it already. Take a glimpse of hard-working former migrant workers, strange but somewhat typical modern family profiles, mistakes, hope, faith, cute kids, good neighbors, second chances and dreams coming true.

You can get it here at AMAZON!!!!

And starting this weekend it will be available in Walmart, K-mart, grocery stores, and bookstores that carry the Love Inspired line from Harlequin!

Rich and powerful, Wall Street financial wizard had it all until his son's death showed him otherwise. A decade later, Conor has made peace with the man he'd been and likes the man he's become. But there's one final step in Conor's healing... making peace with his ex-wife.

Peace with Conor is the last thing on Alicia Bradstreet's mind. Her son's death hurt more than her heart... it darkened her soul. But their daughter's engagement to a single father... a young man much like Conor had been twenty years before... pushes Alicia out of her comfort zone. Can Alicia move beyond her anger - and Conor beyond his guilt - to

Pond levels are up which means fewer fish will die in the drought of August???

That's a stretch-and-a-half, isn't it?

Aye yi yi, who woulda thought a rainy spring would be so hard to appreciate?

Some farmers got fields planted before the heavens opened. Some didn't.

So some farmers are happy because their seed germinated while other fields are under water and the seed is rotting.

Some are sitting on seed because the fields are too wet to get into and as each day ticks by, the northern growing season gets tighter.

A lesson on good drainage.

The kids are restless....

Mud helps restless kids!!!
Aren't they just wonderful girls?????

High school next year...

I've watched these girls grow up for over a decade... I've been a regular part of their daily lives since long before kindergarten snared them away...

And I'm so proud I could bust.

I love them. They are part of my past, my present and my heart.

So who cares if it rains for days when God sends us beautiful children like this to enjoy???

I might not be able to come up with five realistic good things about rain, rain, rain, but I'm totally thrilled with chronic kids.

And helping them grow up!Ruth Logan Hernehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11550734775151341968noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9111441021039703390.post-67889411780623034472013-06-06T09:37:00.002-04:002013-06-06T09:37:35.368-04:00What's happenin'?????Well, there's this:
And my new favorite video for Make My Life An Alleluia (Ruth Elaine Schram) is HERE!!!!

And each day, to quell my somewhat smart aleck attitude I try to remind myself of this beautiful piece of music... to make my life an Alleluia...

To smile instead of frown.

To praise more... and complain less!!!!

Bless youse! May God shelter you, hold you, and shed his light and love on you and your families... who can be unhappy with the light of Christ shining through their eyes???
"Peace begins with a smile".

And no one had a better smile than Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa made her life an "Alleluia" by her day-to-day existence.

I need to strive harder for this.

I need to focus on God more and things less.

I need to feed friendships with gentility and grace, not empty promises.

In mid-winter our choir director Susan Judkins (whom I love) presented us with sheet music for Ruth Elaine Schram's "Make My Life an Alleluia". To me this is a life-changing piece of music. In its simplicity it is a true prayer of open love, quiet and good.

Here is a link to the song "Make My Life an Alleluia" This version was found by my fellow alto Kay Tomer and it's done by the Enfuego Christian Academy... and no doubt they'll end up in a book. :)

When I think of those words.... Hear those words.... contemplate those sweet words I recognize how much more I could and should do. How with a little more focus and presence I can work to truly make my life an alleluia...

Make my life an alleluia....

Showing love for God and fellow man every day... every night.... every moment.

When I'm lax, kicking myself back into gear to share... to smile... to greet.

Make my life an alleluia....

To take each small child that comes into my life and show them the love and tenderness of God's saving grace through a loving touch and a firm reminder.

To puff cool air on their boo-boos and use Band-aids when needed. But not too many because some ouchies are better left to God's clean air.

Make my life an alleluia...

To pray earnestly and ardently in the manner of saints.... and to forgive in the manner of sinners. To take my lack and turn it into something sweet and strong.

God has blessed me by putting me in an amazing country... In a sweet town... in a house that doesn't leak with children who do. :) I have beloved family and friends, clothes and food.... Born in a land of plenty, let me use my self-discipline to not seek more...

Always more....

Make my life an alleluia....

Teach me to be satisfied with what I have... and to share from that banquet of mercy.

Let me praise his name, his glory, his grace, his patience with me because it is wretchedly undeserved.

And in so doing, let me make my life an Alleluia...

A song of praise to you, my king.
New Roof in Progress!!! This long awaited home improvement came after too many back-and-forths with my husband and son-in-law about re-doing this roof.... I stood my ground and we hired it done because it's high.... It's tricky.... and these guys weren't afraid to use harnesses to stay alive! Whereas my very competitive show-off family men... Well. You get the drift of what I'm saying. :) The roof is done, and everyone is alive, which was my goal all along!
These pretty hyacinths came in an arrangement sent in remembrance of our grandson Joseph... Joseph was lost in the sixth month of pregnancy, a bitter time for all of us. But these little blossoms remind us of him... and of life renewed. When my day in heaven comes I will be seated right there, next to other grandmas and mamas, rockin' babies we never got a chance to hold here on Earth.

And we'll tell them stories.... and laugh and sing.

And then.... :) Sleepy baby.
I just love this cover.

I love this book.

I hate the reason I was moved to write this book because my beloved friend Lisa was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer less than two years ago.

I first met Lisa... the REAL Lisa... when she and her husband Jeff came to my house a dozen years ago to talk about watching their newborn daughter Taylor....

You can see Taylor here:

She's the older daughter on the left... my granddaughter Emma was the model for the younger sister in this sweet book.... How precious are they?

So back to the interview with Lisa and Jeff... we live on a farm. In an old house. Life is interesting here and during the interview, Beth discovered a SNAKE on the basement stairs... Luke went running to help her even though he hates snakes... they dispatched the snake with a lot of typical teen theatrics and laughter...

Interview over, right????? Because who would leave their precious 3 month-old daughter in SNAKE HOUSE??????

But, no. Jeff and Lisa thought that if a brother and sister could work together to laugh over disposing of a snake IN THE HOUSE that we must be doing something right. (Silly them!!!)

:)

Four kids and many snakes later (and the occasional mouse and one young squirrel...) we hit the brick wall of breast cancer. Lisa went on the offense with strength, power, prayer, courage and some tears... She dealt with two rounds of chemo... a bi-lateral mastectomy... weeks of radiation.... restructure surgery... loss of hair, loss of weight, all the downsides you associate with fighting this disease.

And today she's doing well... She looks great, she's back to work, I'm annoying her children as always and making fun of her in the nicest way possible...

I love this book. I love how it turned out, how I walked into Van Putte's Garden Center days after Lisa sat on my porch explaining the diagnosis and they were holding a Breast Cancer Appreciation Day.... And I could picture my heroine, running the show, fighting cancer tooth and nail... With everything at her disposal... While a young father struggles to put his life together after losing his beloved wife.

Cancer is indiscriminate. I pray daily for Lisa... for her family... and for researchers to unlock the key to making cancer no more a problem than polio... or tuberculosis... or any of the diseases we've eradicated through generations of faith/time/money/research.

This is a happy book... a feel good story of God's love and new beginnings and one woman's fight to make a difference in her corner of the world.

For a personal glimpse into the REAL Lisa's life, check out this book trailer created by Beth Jamison (former stairway snake fighter!!!) in honor of Lisa, Jeff and "The Lawman's Second Chance": BOOK TRAILER

And the three kids on the cover of "The Lawman's Second Chance" were modeled by Taylor, McKenna and Nolan Tydings....

Lisa's three oldest children. Brody Tydings was busy waging dinosaur wars with Fisher Price Rescue Workers swooping in to save the "little people" from the T-Rex's.

If you're not familiar with this phrase, it's the upper ridge of the Appalachian Mountains, the northern tier... which for us in New York State becomes the Southern Tier because the mountains and rolling hills become our border with Pennsylvania.

It's gorgeous. Rolling. Tree-filled. Animals, small towns, sweet villages, countryside, farmland, just...

Beautiful. Inviting. Embracing.

I fell in love with it in 2007 when I went to a series of Little League championship games in Wellsville, New York in Allegany County... I was there to cheer for the Plainview team, out of Long Island. My young friend Jordan Sekler was playing for their team and this gave us a chance to take the two-hour drive down and watch the games... We love baseball, we love kids, we love the Seklers, so this was a no-brainer. Inspired by both the beauty and the tough times the Southern Tier of Western New York had seen, I decided I wanted to set a series of books in that area.

When I got published, "The Men of Allegany County" became a series of books lauding the beauty of Angelica, Fillmore, Belmont, Wellsville, etc.

Now we're spreading out a bit, including Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties in the mix with the "Kirkwood Lake" Series.... Imagine Chautauqua Lake set in the rolling hills of Cattaraugus County, and you've got "Kirkwood Lake".

I wonder sometimes if people realize the beauty that surrounds them. I think we don't, most often, until something wakes us up to the glory of our everyday existence. To be surrounded by hills, mountains, streams, creeks, rivers, lakes... This is God's country, green and growing.

I've always questioned if the barrenness of the Middle East adds to the torment of the people. Would they be as angry and aggressive if they had the solace of green grass... gentle winds.... tree-filled forests... trickling water... snowy nights?

How much does our setting define us?

I wonder.

Well, let me just say, I love this setting, the Southern Tier of Western New York. It is pastoral... sweet... bucolic... and it seems to be well stocked with TO DIE FOR HEROES, LOL! :)

'Cause ya' gotta have a good hero, right? To match these pull-themselves-up-by-the-bootstraps heroines.
If you're ever up this way, cruise the Southern Tier. Take I-86 (although parts of it need work, ignore that...) and hop off and visit the small towns. Grab some cheese at the Cuba Cheese shop in Cuba, New York. Swing by Angelica and visit the Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Cafe for food and conversation... Grab some candy from Webb's in Mayville on the west shore of Chautauqua Lake... Grab lunch at The Texas Hot in Wellsville and supper at the Beef Haus up the road....

The first "Kirkwood Lake" book comes out in three weeks. "The Lawman's Second Chance" is a 4-Star (Romantic Times, March) compelling read of how life takes sudden bends in the road... and how faith helps us travel unexpected paths.

More on that later.... For now have a blessed, prayerful and thoughtful Holy Week! God bless you!
